Nobody quite like Randy Newman. Great rendering. Where does he come up with those lyrics?

it seems to me that Randy Newman mines reality… and that a significant part of the richness he finds results from his seemingly fearless willingness to express unpleasant truths in plain terms, without trying to explain where his perspective is. more, he’s able (as in this song) to bring together the exalted and debased, the angelic and the less than animal. (Sail Away is similar. Rednecks. Louisiana.) and, again, he does it without explaining how he’s not really a bigot, or he doesn’t really use the word ‘midget’ – but at the same time, it never seems to me that his lack of explanation covers over any real, hardened, bigotry.
